The story was originally in glorious 4-color in Action Comics #500, which I am proud to own.

Oh, and I am right there with you on Krypto. Like, word for word. Pasko, Maggin, Bates, and the other Bronze Age Superman mixed myth with humanity and came up with wonderful. Of course a boy needs a good dog. Of course Superman isn't the lonely, alienated "Last Son of Krypton"; he's got family and peers and friends galore. How do you get the ultimate example of superhero morality? "The Life Story of Superman" is how.

"I love the idea that he knows he can melt steel with his eyes, but it never occurs to him that if he does that with glasses on he'll melt the lenses. I know I would do that."

The counterpart to this always irritated me on "Lois & Clark": Dean Cain would always pull down his glasses a couple inches and look over them to use his X-RAY VISION! Superman can see through walls but not his glasses?!!! No wonder he thinks people won't recognize him with those on, he thinks they're opaque blinders!

I had to ask my high school chemistry teacher if lens glass had traces of lead in it to prove to a classmate (the teacher's daughter and wannabe Teri Hatcher) how stupid it was.
